Women's basketball team makes run for Horizon League title

A record of 14-7 overall and 6-4 in conference play has the Viking women’s basketball team in fifth place in the Horizon League and in the middle of another good season under head coach Kate Peterson-Abiad.

“We have a lot of veteran players,” Peterson-Abiad said. “It’s beneficial to have the experience of the same girls playing together.”

Although the Vikings lost their game against Youngstown State University Saturday, Jan. 20, senior guard Khayla Livingston moved to 14th place on Cleveland State University’s all-time scoring list.

“Khayla doesn’t only bring scoring but she also is a league leader in assists,” Peterson-Abiad said. “We have a lot of prolific scorers on this team, but sometimes we can rely on them too much.”

At this point in the season there is a lot to be happy with when it comes to this basketball team, Peterson-Abiad said.

“I’ve been happy that we’ve beaten the teams that the basketball world said we should beat,” Peterson-Abiad said. “Even in rough games for us we can hold our own and squeeze out the win.”

With five seniors and four juniors this team has the experience to make a push for the Horizon League title and a spot in the NCAA tournament, but like any sport, there’s always room for improvement.

“Right now we’re working on consistency and effort,” Peterson-Abiad said.

The Horizon League Tournament starts March 2 at the Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit, Mich.

“We need to keep our competitive edge,” Peterson-Abaid said. “Working on our rebounding and hustling back to set our defense is something we can control and we need to work on it.”
