Cleveland State celebrates student-athletes with seventh annual VESPY's event

The Cleveland State University athletic community came together May 1 to honor its student-athletes, coaches and administrators at the seventh annual Viking Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (VESPY’s) show in the Student Center Ballroom.

Highlighted by dinner and video presentations, the event featured 12 different awards, including Mr. Viking and Ms. Viking. Two members of the swimming and diving program, Molly McNamara and MacJilton Lewis, received the Ms. Viking and Mr. Viking distinction , respectively.

The event also featured two first-time awards. The Viking Strong award, which was given to the student-athlete who shows energy and enthusiasm in the weight room, went to Toni Dickson of women’s soccer.

Women’s swimming and diving member Cassandra Oltman received the second new award, the Green Heart, which recognizes the student-athlete who returned from injury or hardship to success in an individual sport.
McNamara, on top of being named Ms. Viking, was also named the Female Athlete of the Year and won the Best Individual Perfomance award. She was named Horizon League Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year at the end of her season.

Nico Mostardi of men’s tennis won Male Athlete of the Year. Mostardi is the reigning Horizon League Men’s Tennis Player of the Year.

Savanna Crockett of the women’s basketball team earned Freshman of the Year honors after a stellar rookie campaign that saw her named Horizon League Freshman of the Year.
